David Akers: Goodbye and Good Luck

According to NFL News, the 49ers are parting ways with kicker David Akers who struggled mightily last season, and unless you've been living under a rock for the past year, this should come as no surprise. Still, I have to admire Akers' toughness in trying to play through a pelvic injury that clearly diminished his accuracy as a kicker.

He was amazing 2011, setting the all-time record for most field goal completions in a season, but his horrid 2012 season is further proof that a football player is only as good as his most recent season.

Anyways, I hope Akers gets a second shot somewhere, because he is a good guy. As a 49er, he was a spiritual leader in the locker room and runs a charity to help disadvantaged youth. Aside from his own health problems, he's had to endure helping his 6-year old daughter fight cancer too, so I can't help but root for the guy.

Good luck to you and your family David.
