49ers draft visits: Add D.J. Hayden to the list

Thomas B. Shea

The 49ers visited with cornerback D.J. Hayden. How high will the 49ers consider the cornerback position?

Earlier this week, Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden conducted a workout in front of 15 teams. Hayden had taken part in Houston's pro day, but a hamstring injury cut short his day. This personal workout provided him an opportunity to complete drills and show teams he was recovered from the injury.

Gil Brandt reported that the 49ers were in attendance, with secondary coach Ed Donatell getting a chance to observe Hayden in person. This came a week after Hayden visited directly with the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers have had numerous visits over the last few months, and tomorrow morning I'll have a final rundown of the players they hosted or worked out. It will not be a complete list because we do not know every visit that has taken place over the last three months. If the 49ers had it their way, we would not know about any of the visits. Obviously though, news leaks and we get at least some idea of what's going on.

If you don't recall Hayden, Trevor Woods put together a scouting report on the Houston cornerback. He has climbed pundit draft boards, and he could find himself getting tapped by somebody on day one.

The 49ers are in an interesting position at cornerback. Although the 49ers are always looking ahead, it will be interesting to see where, if at all, they pull the trigger on a cornerback. The team has the picks to add a cornerback, but they also have a pretty full house at the position, as is. The good news, if you want to call it that, is that the team are in a position where they could bring in significant rookie cornerback, and have room to clear out one of the existing cornerbacks.

Personally, I don't think the team uses first or second round picks at the position, but I also would not be completely shocked if it did happen. I've learned to not get to set in my ways when it comes to 49ers decisions.
