Devery Henderson mentioned by John Clayton as potential Michael Crabtree replacement

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

The loss of Michael Crabtree means the 49ers have to find ways to replace his production on the outside. One bit of speculation centers around Devery Henderson.

Yesterday, Wes put together a few thoughts on Brandon Lloyd as a possible replacement, and naturally the former 49ers wide receiver brought in plenty of conversation. The 49ers will need to figure out how to replace Michael Crabtree's production, whether that be through internal options or external options.

Speaking of external options, ESPN's John Clayton shot out an interesting tweet on Friday:

This strikes me more as speculation than a rumor without any sort of, "source close to the situation" or "league source" or any other context.

Henderson strikes me as the ultimate definition of inconsistent. He is a talented receiver, but he has frequently struggled to put his talents to effective use throughout his NFL career. His best season came in 2009 when he had 51 receptions for 804 yards. He has great straight-line speed, but he hasn't been able to completely turn it into any sort of "football speed".

Editor's Note: This negative report might also be due to my bitterness about him from a dynasty league I was in a while back! When I'd start Henderson he'd do nothing, and when I'd sit him he'd put up great numbers. What are you gonna do?

Most of the options in free agency are rather limited, and I still think the upside of the 49ers internal options outweighs the safe nature of the free agents. That's not to say the 49ers internal options will pan out, but I'd lean toward rolling the dice with them over the blah nature of the free agent receivers. I wouldn't be surprised to see Trent Baalke add another wide receiver before training camp, but I would be surprised if any such addition was on the 49ers roster when September rolls around.
