My All-Time 24-Player Team

Rick Stewart

I thought it would be interesting to try to select a team of all-time greats and put them together, one player at each position. This assumes a base I-Formation on offense and a base 4-3 on defense. It also assumes that all players are playing at the peak of their careers. I'm sure that everyone has a different opinion about this, but I've always liked debating about who the best of all time at any given position was (or is).

Here goes:

QB: Joe Montana

RB: Barry Sanders

FB: Jim Brown

WR1: Jerry Rice

WR2: Calvin Johnson

TE: Tony Gonzalez

LT: Anthony Munoz

LG: Randall McDaniel

C: Bruce Matthews

RG: John Hannah

RT: Forrest Gregg

DE: Reggie White

DT1: Howie Long

DT2: "Mean Joe" Green

DE2: David "Deacon" Jones

OLB: Lawrence Taylor

MLB: Jack Lambert

OLB: Derrick Thomas

CB: Deion Sanders (also my KR)

FS: Ronnie Lott

SS: Dick "Night Train" Lane

CB: Willie Brown

P: Ray Guy

K: Jason Elam

Honorable mentions to: Gale Sayers, Shannon Sharpe, Walter Payton, Adrian Peterson, Cris Carter, Merlin Olsen, a lot of LBs (Butkus, Nietske, Ham, Ray Lewis, Kevin Greene); a litany of QBs that you can all already name; Larry Csonka; Jack Tatum; Marvin Harrison; Randy Moss; and Jim Otto.

I might have a man-crush on Calvin Johnson, but I couldn't move him from the #2 spot, not even for Marvin Harrison. I think if you put him with Peyton Manning (like Harrison was), that Johnson could easily eclipse any receiving record in the league (sacrilege from a '9ers fan, I know, but Johnson is a freak).

Also, yes, I know that Dick Lane is technically not a safety, but, because football rules and regulations were so different and passing attacks were so primitive in his day, I think that he would line up at safety now. In any case, I couldn't justify keeping him off the list, even if it was for Deion and Willie Brown.

On a side note, here is a little something to make you laugh:
