San Francisco Super Bowl 50 bid: Miami holding key vote on taxpayer-funded renovation of Sun Life Stadium

Jason O. Watson-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL is considering Miami and San Francisco as potential hosts for Super Bowl 50. Miami faces a key vote on Friday and potentially again on May 14 regarding renovations to Sun Life Stadium.

Later this month, the NFL owners will vote on the host of Super Bowl 50 at the league's annual spring meeting May 21 in Boston. The vote is between Miami/South Beach and the San Francisco Bay Area. The 49ers new stadium is scheduled to open in 2014, which gets it in just in time to be considered for what is a fairly historic Super Bowl.

The vote could be decided sooner rather than later however, as there might be some renovation issues to deal with in Miami. The NFL has reportedly told Miami that Sun Life Stadium needs renovations in order to host the Super Bowl. Accordingly, there is a $350 million plan waiting in the Florida House. If it passes there, it would be presented as a referendum to voters on May 14. The current session ends today, and if the House does not get the plan approved, the voter referendum would be cancelled.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, polls show Florida voters strongly oppose the plan. I haven't been able to find polling data, so we'll just have to wait and see on that. Of course, as they point out, Florida voters are likely still bitter over getting hosed in the Marlins stadium deal.

If the Bill does not get out of the House, or if it does and the voters vote it down, it sounds like the Bay Area will have this thing just about sewn up. We'll have to wait until the May 21 vote, but things are looking up for a Bay Area Super Bowl 50. I'm looking at potentially going up to Boston for the vote, so we'll see what I can come up with for that.
