The San Francisco 49ers offseason takes another step forward today as rookies are arriving in Santa Clara for the three-day rookie minicamp. The NFL reported it as starting tomorrow, but rookies are tweeting out their flights today to San Jose.
Matt Barrows pointed out that the camp covers current rookies, but also covers second year players who did not accrue a season of credit last year. According to Barrows, that includes OL Al Netter, OL Wayne Tribue, OL Kenny Wiggins, S Michael Thomas, LB Nate Stupar, and P Anthony Santella.
Last week, I put together a rundown of the 49ers roster based on signings and rumored undrafted free agent additions. All the rumors panned out, but there were a couple additions, including two tryout players. Nate Montana and Greg Wilson are the only players anybody has confirmed as coming in for a tryout. They both have asterisks next to their names.
The 49ers roster currently includes 89 players plus the two tryout players. The 49ers are allowed up to 90 players when they head into training camp, so there is space for one more player. If I were to guess, I would go with the team adding another kicker to give Dawson some rest during the preseason. The team signed punter Anthony Santella, but I'm not quite sure if he can handle kickoffs as well in August.
