Yesterday afternoon, shortly before practice started, the San Francisco 49ers announced they had signed WR Brandon Carswell and released tight end Cameron Morrah. Well, Morrah might be getting called to the white courtesy phone. There were reports yesterday that Carswell left practice early on after an injury. Turns out it was bad. Jim Harbaugh informed the media on Thursday that Carswell suffered a torn ACL. That will end his season before it began.
Earlier today, the 49ers brought in Austin Collie for a workout. This would seem to explain that to a certain extent. If healthy, Collie has significantly more upside than Carswell, so it is possible it is just a coincidence, but I'd imagine there is some relation.
The 49ers wide receiver position is of course up for debate given the injury to Michael Crabtree. We don't have much of a grasp on how the 49ers coaching staff feels about the position. They are bringing in receivers, but they're such late additions, I'm not really sure what to make of it for now. It could be concern over the options behind Anquan Boldin, it could just be to provide more competition to sharpen the iron.
