The San Francisco 49ers added undrafted rookie punter and placekicker Colton Schmidt to the 90-man off-season roster on Wednesday according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. "Legatron" takes the spot vacated by injured wide receiver Brandon Carswell.
Schmidt, 22, averaged 44.5 yards per punt at UC Davis last season. He was a two-time all-conference selection for the Aggies and holds the school record for longest punt at 78 yards. He was well known for constantly booting kicks into the end zone for touchbacks.
The Bakersfield-native impressed 49ers special teams coach Brad Seely at a rookie tryout in June.
The 49ers already have All-Pro punter Andy Lee and Pro Bowl kicker Phil Dawson and neither veteran is in danger of losing their job and Schmidt understands that. He will be there to spell them and make the most of his reps.
Rookies report to training camp in Santa Clara on July 19.
If anything, he's got the best nickname of any kicker in the NFL.
