49ers acquire Eric Wright from Tampa Bay Buccaneers for conditional late-round pick

USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers have reportedly traded for Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Eric Wright. What does it all mean?

Earlier today, the 49ers waived UDFA cornerback Lowell Rose, and they have quickly made a move of significantly more prominence. Josina Anderson is reporting that the 49ers have sent a conditional 2014 late round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for cornerback Eric Wright.

The addition of Wright puts the cornerback battle into serious overdrive. The 49ers signed Nnamdi Asomugha, which was already going to make things interesting. Adding in Wright to the mix adds more talent to the competition. Wright was originally a 2007 second round pick of the Cleveland Browns. He spent four seasons in Cleveland before signing a one-year deal with the Lions. After a solid year with the Lions he signed wit the Bucs. He is entering the final season of that contract, and is scheduled to earn a base salary of $1.5 million, with a chance to climb to $3 million.

This gets really interesting for Carlos Rogers, among others. It will be the best guys for the job, but Rogers' salary does not help his case. We'll have to wait and see what competition brings, but according to Joel Corry, cutting Rogers would create $4.99 million in cap space for 2013, and he would count $2,989,063 in dead money against the 2014 cap.

It is worth noting he is not related to the former 49ers cornerback Eric Wright. In case you were wondering.

We'll be back with plenty more on this developing situation.
