Kyle Williams likely not expecting long stay on 49ers PUP list

Alberto E. Rodriguez

The 49ers placed Kyle Williams on the PUP list as they get ready to open training camp. Williams thinks he is ready to play, so what does it all mean?

Over the weekend, the San Francisco 49ers made several roster moves with their injured players. In case you missed it, they placed four players on the Active/PUP list, and they placed four players on the Active/NFI list. The PUP list additions included WR Kyle Williams, RB Kendall Hunter, WR Mario Manningham and LB Darius Fleming. The NFI list additions included RB Marcus Lattimore, DT Tank Carradine, DT Quinton Dial and OT Luke Marquardt.

A day after the announcement, Kyle Williams had this to say:

As would be expected, some folks are wondering what this means for Williams and his knee and training camp. In mid-May, Williams posted a green light on Instagram, saying he got great news from the doctor. Then, toward the end of minicamp, Williams made an appearance in some passing drills.

So, what does his inclusion on the PUP list mean? Well, it could mean a lot of things that we don't know, but more than likely this is merely an administrative move that provides the 49ers with a variety of roster options if it becomes necessary. Veterans report to Santa Clara on Wednesday, with the first day of practice set for Thursday. Wednesday will see the veterans go through their physicals, which will give the doctors another chance to check out Williams' knee.

If things are progressing like it sounds, he should be cleared to play pretty quickly. The 49ers might take a day or two to finalize it, but I strongly expect Williams to be on the practice field by the weekend, if not sooner. However, in placing him on the Active/PUP list, the 49ers protect themselves in case the physical turns up anything out of the ordinary. There is no reason to think it will happen, but when it comes to the players, it is better to be safe than sorry.
