This is going to be a re action piece. It is going to be about something that happened in the slow part of the NFL season and sports season in general. If this is not your thing thanks for stopping by there are a lot of great articles on Niners Nation to read through. The quaterback and face of the franchise was recently seen sporting a Miami Dolphins cap, then tweeted he was going to wear what he wants don't worry about it. At the face of it that seems like a logical response. Leave me alone, let me dress how I want it doesn't affect my play. If he was some guard or faceless special teamer then yes I would totally agree with him. He isn't though, he is the face of the San Francisco 49ers. There are special rules he has to live by now whether he likes it or not.
He can not wear another teams colors. It would be like working for Pepsi and going around in a Coke hat, you may like Coke and bust your hump for Pepsi but it sends the wrong message. Even if it doesn't send the wrong message it puts seeds out there for the media and sports talk to plant and water and grow. Is Kaep happy in the Bay? Does he not care about the 49ers? All of these are stupid questions but with the amount of 24 hour sports "news" and talk shows on television and radio it will get play time. He has to realize he will be photographed no matter where he goes. In an age where every phone is a video camera and everyone is a "journalist" and tweets and instagrams there is no privacy outside your door anymore. He has to learn that and get used to it. With the fame and glory of playing the most visible position in the most popular sport in America comes restrictions. You either accept it and learn to live with them or you but heads with everyone and eventually you become the bad guy, then the annoying guy, then Jay Cutler.
He is the face of this team. When people think 9ers, they think him. He can't be seen in any other color then red and gold. It sucks, it shouldn't be that way but it is. With millions of dollars and fame comes a price to pay, pay it. As to the assertion that 9ers fans are acting like crazy girlfriends I'd say that's going a bit too far. Its not like he mentioned something about the dolphins being a great organization he was wearing their colors even though he is the captain of a rival team. It would be like seeing your girlfriend wearing another guys shirt. At that point you have a right to ask why...and again why. Kaep has got to realize he is no longer that wolfpack qb, he is the 49ers. When he steps out that door he is representing his team and his teammates will see everything he does. He says he will grind for his teamates, but in this case he won't stick up for the team or represent them if it means he may not fit in while he's vacationing. I know wearing a hat doesn't mean that, you know it but after his first bad game, the first time he seems like he's dogging it stuff like this has a way of creeping into the mind and starting seeds of doubt.
It sucks he can't go on being a private citizen anymore, but that is the price he is going to pay to be treated like some conquering hero on Sundays. To have millions...and millions.. of screaming fans chanting his name. He may not want the fame, but it comes with the job. He has to grow up a bit and realize this, like Manning, Brady, and Alex Smith did. I guess that is the crux of my problem with Kaep, his immaturity in this. I know he's young and he has done all the right things up until now but this hurts a bit. I'm not saying I think he's trash or a punk, far from it. This has shown he is still young and for all the accolades still immature. He shouldn't of worn another teams hat, he shouldn't of defended himself doing so. I know he didn't do anything wrong, but it feels wrong and with fandom passion usually trumps logic. Like watching an old game and getting excited for the failed 4rth quarter drive, somehow thinking maybe, just maybe this time we win. You've all done it don't look at me like that.
I wish Kaep had handled this better. I wish he was still sterling in my eyes. To be honest though, this isn't that big a deal and yeah I'm a bit dissapointed he did this and for whatever reason he can't afford clothes that fit or a belt that works. I will get over it and it's not even a really big deal, but still it galls me a bit. I don't think I'm acting like a crazy girlfriend, I don't want to break up with Kaep hell I'd still wash his car and make him sandwiches. Its sort of like the first time you catch your crush/boyfriend/girlfriend doing something gross or watching them commit a pet peeve. You get over it, you still love them but for a bit it dims their shine. So I can see how some people could have a problem with what Kaep did, and I think he did commit a faux pas but its summer there is no football and hopefully this is all so much filler on the way to the Superbowl.
