The 49ers beat writers have started releasing their practice reports, and it is not surprising that there is a bit of discussion about all the injury news today. Head down to the bottom to check out the reports. I'll add more as they come in tonight.
The injuries were the story of the day, but there was actually other stuff going on. Trenton Robinson got free safety work with the first team at the start of practice, while Eric Reid rotated in with the first team later in practice. Vic Fangio has said the team would rotate between Robinson, Reid, Craig Dahl and C.J. Spillman, and that has happened thus far. It might be a couple weeks before Reid is able to wrest the position away from the other three. That sounds a little presumptuous I suppose, but I continue to believe that I would be shocked if Reid was not starting by Week 1 of the regular season.
Tramaine Brock handled Chris Culliver's role in practice today. Nnamdi Asomugha and Perrish Cox were the primary backups. I don't know that the depth chart will necessarily stay this way, but we'll have to wait and see. Brock has been primarily a special teams guy during his 49ers career, but this is a big opportunity for him.
It sounds like for the most part it was a relatively quiet day for the offense. Chad Hall made some short catches, while Marlon Moore did not appear in the practice reports and Marlon Moore apparently had a nice catch. Quinton Patton continues to wear his non-contact jersey, but apparently he "accidentally" caught a pass. From what I'm reading in the reports and on Twitter, Scott Tolzien fired a pass his way by accident and Patton caught it with one hand. It sounds like it was mostly reflex for Patton to catch it, but it didn't seem to create any problems.
B.J. Daniels got some love from Jim Harbaugh in his press conference. Daniels is lining up at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and punt returner. Harbaugh had a few comments about Daniels after practice:
Where do you classify QB B.J. Daniels, he's all over the place, do you view him as a potential number three or is he kind of a Swiss-army knife kind of a player?
"He's really kind of progressing at quarterback. He's doing a good job there. Then he's put in a lot of work at the receiver position and the halfback position. He's getting an opportunity to practice at all three of those positions right now. It's been impressive how he goes from receiver to quarterback and then takes off and puts on the gloves and he's back at running back. He's doing a pretty darn good job. I think just what we have been doing is more and more quarterback play as the days go by and he's showing a good grasp of the offense. Arrow up there."
Do you think that's helped him to wear so many different hats so when he goes back to quarterback he has a more substantial view of the offense?
"I think it does because, just understanding the offense from different positions points of view. Also, engaged every snap. So I think it's been beneficial."
Injury Report
The 49ers had 16 players sidelined for one reason or another throughout practice. Patrick Willis and Chris Culliver were the most obvious, of course. Jonathan Goodwin also did not practice, and has now missed several days this week. There has been no indication as to why Goodwin isn't practicing. Daniel Kilgore is getting the snaps in his place, so we are left to wait and wonder what's going on.
