San Francisco 49ers new depth chart features modest changes

Cary Edmondson-US PRESSWIRE

The 49ers released their second depth chart of the 2013 NFL preseason. The 49ers face the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, and they have not made many significant changes to the depth chart. Kendall Hunter's return marks the biggest change. You can track all the depth charts in our story stream.

The San Francisco 49ers released their second depth chart of the preseason, and there are only modest changes. The only significant change is Kendall Hunter's activation from the Active/PUP list. I've created a story stream where I will post each 49ers depth chart throughout the season. There will not be many changes over the coming months, but it is still worth tracking to see if anybody quietly climbs or falls.

Last week, Jim Harbaugh was asked about different aspects of the 49ers depth chart. Coach Harbaugh downplayed the nature of the depth chart:

The depth chart is not a painstaking thing that I go fill out. That's, [director of public relations] Bob Lange fills out the depth chart. So I wouldn't read, nothing against Bob, it's not. Understand I wouldn't read too much into it. It's not a painstaking process to fill out the depth chart.

As I understand it, some of the coaches provide some information for the depth chart, but it seems like more of an informational tool from the public relations department. We can see that even in the safety depth chart. They list C.J. Spillman and Eric Reid as the first two safeties, and then Craig Dahl as the second strong safety. Of course, we all know Dahl got the start at free safety last week.

For now, it gives us a chance to poke around and see what the 49ers may or may not be thinking. As we move into Week 2 of the preseason, we're that much closer to the first cutdown date, when the 49ers get down to 75 players. We'll see the bottom of the roster get cleaned up as we move toward the final cuts.

In looking at the current roster, some guys who are looming as part of the first 15 cuts include Patrick Omameh, Wayne Tribue, Jason Schepler, Mike Purcell and Lamar Divens. Those are probably the easiest names on the list. After that, I'd imagine Al Netter, possibly Chuck Jacobs and/or Lavelle Hawkins, Travis Johnson and maybe Darryl Morris could all find themselves on the chopping block. As the 49ers get deeper, it becomes harder to find some of the more immediate roster cuts.
