49ers vs. Chiefs injury, snap update: Joe Staley unlikely to travel, four quarterbacks expected to play

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers head to Kansas City on Thursday for their Friday preseason matchup with the Chiefs. We take a look at Jim Harbaugh's recent comments on snaps count and injuries.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media this afternoon, and he provided a few details in advance of Friday's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Harbaugh said that Joe Staley was unlikely to make the trip to Kansas City, although he did say he needed to double-check. He also said all four quarterbacks would probably get into the game.

Staley would be among approximately eight or nine players, that will not make the trip to Arrowhead Stadium. Staley is dealing with an undisclosed injury and has missed several days of practice. One other player we know that will not play is Vance McDonald. He's also dealing with an undisclosed injury that Harbaugh indicated would cost him 7-10 days. Raymond Ventrone has been sidelined since suffering an injury against the Broncos, so odds are probably not good for him to play. We'll see when news comes out about who makes the trip.

The other piece of notable news was Harbaugh stating that he expected all four quarterbacks to get some playing time on Friday. Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien all got quarterback snaps last Thursday, while B.J. Daniels got one running back snap and three snaps on special teams. There is just a little bit of anticipation to see Daniels in at quarterback. It would not surprise me to see a modest spike in game thread comments whenever Daniels gets into the game.

Coach Harbaugh was asked about playing time for the first stringers, and he would not commit to any specifics. He said starters probably would play longer than last time, but he couldn't give a number of series or quarters since it would depend on how a given series goes. After all, if Kap and the offense have back-to-back three and outs, they might get another one or two series, while if they have back-to-back ten play drives, that might be enough. It all depends on the context of the drives.
