49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media today, and it should surprise nobody that he was asked about potential practice reps for quarterback B.J. Daniels. According to Harbaugh, Daniels will get similar snaps to current backups Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien. Previously, he was getting the fewest snaps among the quarterbacks.
Coming off a strong fourth quarter performance against the Kansas City Chiefs, the 49ers rookie QB opened some eyes with his performance. Harbaugh has indicated in the past that Daniels was part of the competition behind Colin Kaepernick, but the comments alway seemed more like throwaway comments. It seemed like McCoy and Tolzien were competing, and Daniels was just looking to improve as a quarterback.
Now, we suddenly have a bit of a brewing controversy. It's not exactly a big time quarterback controversy, but it's interesting nonetheless. The 49ers have two more games to figure out who will be the backup, and what to do with Daniels. If he puts up another strong performance, it makes for an interesting roster decision in a couple weeks.
I've attached a poll just to see what people think will play out in two weeks. The bottom three options are for if you think the 49ers will only keep one quarterback when they cut down to 53 players.
