Lavelle Hawkins gets all the flags

The San Francisco 49ers head into the second half leading the Minnesota Vikings 20-7, thanks to a big touchdown return by Lavelle Hawkins. After the 49ers gave up a touchdown to the Vikings, wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins lined up deep for the ensuing kickoff. He wound his way through traffic for a 105-yard kickoff return, showing some solid burst on the play.

Unfortunately for Hawkins, he got a little too into it, and earned himself a pair of penalties for excessive celebration. During the return, he pointed the ball back at the Vikings while high-stepping, and then upon getting into the end zone, he removed his helmet. The first ball-waving seemed a bit ticky-tack, but the second penalty for removing his helmet was spot on. It is kind of amazing that a player can forget that rule so blatantly. Fortunately the penalty was added on to the ensuing kickoff, so the 49ers kept the touchdown.

Hawkins is likely on the wrong side of the roster bubble, but the big return should buy him a little more time. The 49ers return competition seemed to be focused on LaMichael James and Perrish Cox, but Hawkins could insert himself into the competition with a strong close to the evening. It's a bit of a long-shot, but you never know.

Quinton Patton scores a touchdown, does a dance

While WR Kyle Williams is sitting out the 49ers third preseason game, rookie receiver Quinton Patton made his debut. And boy has it been impressive. After a slow start for the offense, Colin Kaepernick caught fire, connecting twice with Patton for 24 yards and a touchdown. Patton capped the touchdown with a dance that I cannot even begin to describe. How would you describe it? Is this some dance I should know about?

Patton made his debut this evening after sitting out the first two games with a finger injury. Patton injured his finger catching a pass from Colt McCoy early in camp. He continued to practice, but first could not catch passes, and then could only use one hand. The 49ers are looking for any help they can get at wide receiver, and performances like this are likely to earn the rookie more playing time. The 49ers have one more preseason game after tonight, so we'll see how much more time he sees.

Kyle Williams sitting out Vikings game

The San Francisco 49ers are hosting the Minnesota Vikings in their third preseason game of 2013, and they will be without one of their potential starting wide receivers. The 49ers are holding back Kyle Williams for the third straight game.

Williams returned from a torn ACL for the start of training camp, but he suffered a hamstring strain early on. He missed a week of practice, and while he has been back practicing, the team has kept him out of their preseason games. From his twitter account, it seems like Kyle Williams is chomping at the bit to get back on the field. This is not exactly shocking.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Williams gets back on the field. The 49ers have given Colin Kaepernick limited snaps, so they would seem to not be overly concerned with rust or any chemistry issues. The 49ers have plenty of question marks at wide receiver, so we'll see if Williams gets any snaps in the preseason finale this Thursday.
