NFL trade rumors: 49ers shopping Colt McCoy, per Ian Rapoport

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers are reportedly shopping Colt McCoy in hopes of getting something in return for the struggling backup QB. We break down what the news means to the 49ers quarterback situation, and more.

Fooch's Update: Follow-up tweet that Colt McCoy re-did his contract yesterday. That would lessen chance he is outright released.

The Colt McCoy era is apparently on the verge of ending before it began. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting the 49ers are making calls in an attempt to trade backup QB Colt McCoy. According to Rapoport, McCoy would be released if a deal cannot be completed. There was no mention of teams, but you have to think the New York Jets, and possibly the Buffalo Bills have heard from Trent Baalke & Co.

Given the team's decision to sign Seneca Wallace, I suppose this is not really a surprise. McCoy was believed to be locked in as the team's primary backup QB, but he has struggled in two preseason appearances. Scott Tolzien has not been much better, but the 49ers might be more inclined to continue working him along. Or, we're looking at Seneca Wallace, backup QB. I realize B.J. Daniels can also factor into the discussion, but I'd be pretty surprised if the team was already prepared to place him in the No. 2 spot.

The 49ers first roster cuts are due by Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. PT. If the 49ers are intent on unloading Colt McCoy, it makes sense to get it done sooner rather than later. It gives them a much-needed spot among the 75, and it gives McCoy time to potentially sign with a team before the final week of preseason games.

The biggest disappointment is the draft picks given up. The 49ers gave up an fifth and a seventh, while getting a sixth back in return. The 49ers have a lot of draft picks, but they are essential currency for a team dealing with all sorts of big salaries in the near future. They cannot afford many mistakes like this.
