Tuesday afternoon, 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio met with the media, and he had some interesting things to say about the 49ers cornerback competition:
Is CB Nnamdi Asomugha your third corner going into the season?
"After the game the other night, I believe so. But right now, both him and [CB Tramaine] Brock - Brock was nursing an injury prior to the third preseason game and the second preseason game, which allowed Nnamdi to move ahead. Now Nnamdi's nursing a little injury right now. It's a little bit unsettled because of the injury situation, more so than anything."
So, according to Fangio, Tramaine Brock went through an injury that allowed Nnamdi Asomugha to surpass him on the depth chart. Now, Nnamdi is apparently dealing with some kind of minor injury, leaving the situation unsettled. I did not see anything on Sunday that was indicative of an injury, but it's possible it was small enough that he could get past it during the game.
As we head into the regular season, I have a hunch we could see some rotation between these two, and possibly Perrish Cox as well. Fangio was asked about getting Nnamdi work on the left side, where he has not played much in his career:
"He had told us from the start that left or right wasn't a big issue for him and it's turned out to be true. We put him at left, I don't know, two weeks ago, ten days ago, after getting a lot at the right. It was a seamless transition for him."
The 49ers are going to be resting a lot of players on Thursday, and I imagine Nnamdi and Brock could end up getting fewer snaps. I wouldn't mind seeing Marcus Cooper and Darryl Morris getting a lot of Thursday's snaps. This is one last chance to see what both rookies can do, so why not roll them out as much as possible?
