49ers to release Seneca Wallace per Barrows

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

The 49ers are reportedly going to release quarterback Seneca Wallace. We break down the impact on the quarterbacks.

The San Francisco 49ers apparently have their quarterback rotation set even before Thursday's preseason finale gets going. According to Matt Barrows, a league source indicated the 49ers have decided to release Seneca Wallace and not play him against the Chargers.

Earlier in team warm-ups, Wallace was not spotted on the field, leading to question marks. Prior to Barrows' tweet, FOX Sports' Peter Schrager tweeted that Wallace was considering retirement. After Barrows tweeted the above info, he then said that any report indicating Wallace was going to retire was untrue. Maiocco followed that all up with a tweet that the 49ers said Wallace did not travel to San Diego for personal reasons. The whole thing is a little odd, but it would seem that at the very least, Wallace's time in San Francisco is done.

That leaves the 49ers with Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy and B.J. Daniels at quarterback. This has been an odd week for the 49ers. The team signed Seneca Wallace prior to last Sunday's game, and he got a little over one minute of playing time at the end. The team then released Scott Tolzien on Monday.

If Colin Kaepernick does not play Thursday night, that means we'll see a whole lot of Colt McCoy and B.J. Daniels. It should make this game at least a little more interesting.
