If there was any question about Cam Johnson's bubble status, he might have answered it Thursday evening. With a quarter left to play, Cam Johnson has two sacks, multiple quarterback pressures, and added a beautiful punt block near the end of the third quarter. Johnson burst through to block the punt, and then recovered the loose ball in the end zone for the touchdown. The score gave the 49ers a 27-6 lead. Here is a GIF of the block.
Prior to Thursday's game, Johnson was firmly on the roster bubble. The 49ers decision to trade Parys Haralson could be seen as a vote of confidence for the remaining outside linebackers, but Johnson was still potentially behind Corey Lemonier and Dan Skuta. After Thursday's game, if the 49ers were hoping to slide Johnson to the practice squad, they might have lost any such opportunity.
The big question is if they would have enough playing opportunities for the trio of outside linebackers. I suspect one of them would be inactive many Sundays, but it will depend in part on how the 49ers stock their special teams units. For now though, Johnson cannot do much else.
