I'll admit it: I didn't have BJ Daniels anywhere near the 53-man roster in my initial projections. I figured that he would just be another 7th-round pick who would take a couple of years to develop on the PS, and that was IF he even was to qualify to make that part of the squad.
Now that he has made the roster, it will be fascinating to see how the 49ers use him (if he's active, that is). There's an article on 49ers.com (http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/Versatile-Daniels-to-Focus-on-QB-Role/172f64c5-b6c1-4c57-8b4d-7f7213bbdeeb) that mentions that Daniels is now focusing exclusively on his role as emergency QB. However, I'm not sure that I'm buying that. Greg Roman/Jim Harbaugh don't follow conventional rules when it comes to where to play guys and how to play them.
For example, picture this:
Singleback Pistol Formation with 2 TE and 2 WR; Kaepernick lined up at QB and Daniels directly behind him as RB. Kaepernick reads the defense, and, after the ball is snapped, tosses the ball to Daniels. Does the defense rush up to defend the run (which they were already watching for anyway)? If it does, Daniels can throw (he is a QB, after all) to Boldin/Patton/Davis/McDonald, or, even, (on a really tricky play) a streaking Colin Kaepernick. If the defense is wary of the pass, then Daniels has the ability to turn up field and gain a few yards with his natural speed and elusiveness. You could even turn this play around and have Kaepernick behind Daniels!
I've gotta admit, I smiled when the thought of the 49ers running that play on the Packers' defense (whether in week 1 or the playoffs) came to my mind. That's not a play that Scott Tolzien would know anything about. :) (Then again, I frowned when I thought of them running it from their own ten-yard line in the second half of a game against the Rams)
This team that the 49ers have built is truly amazing; it is a versatile, dynamic, athletic juggernaut of a machine that will be hard for anyone to stop. I can't wait for week 1 when we get to see exactly what the plan is going to be!
