Did the Seahawks Actually Shut Boldin Down the Last Time??! Let's Look

Field Gulls

Anquan Boldin last saw the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle back on November 13, 2011. As I've been reminded all week, Boldin recorded 2 catches for 22 yards. Does that help us clarify expectations for this week? Sure. And since it does, digging a little deeper should clarify even further.

Below, I've extracted each of Boldin's 14 targets from PFF. Below that I inserted my notes from watching the tape. Here's a quick recap of the game.

Sunday, November 13, 2011

(6-2) Baltimore Ravens 17 (2-6) Seattle Seahawks 22

Seattle Won the turnover battle 3-0 and won the game 17-22 on 5 Field Gulls and a Lynch touchdown. Baltimore's kick returner fumbled away 2 kicks and Flacco let a quick slant intended for Boldin get tipped by an unblocked DE, resulting in an interception going the other way inside the Rayvins red zone. They held Seattle to a Field Gull on that, too.

Seattle was penalized 13 times for 100 yards, 4 of which occurred when Boldin was targeted, negating one of his catches.

Let's look at the play-by-play breakdown by PFF here, and below it I inserted a truncated summary typed up while watching the game tape.

1st Qtr

04:29 5yd completion.

2nd Qtr

14:16 INC, Sherman broke it up.
12:02 PI on Browner.
00:21 17 yards on Sherman.

3rd Qtr

14:55 Leroy Hill broke it up.
14:13 Inerception. From left slot, quick slant on Sherman, Boldin is open. The was ball tipped at the line by an unblocked DE #50, then picked off. Sherman instantly leveled Boldin in the back at tip of the ball.
10:25 INC. Dropped. Boldin lines up wide left and gets very good separation on Browner running a 15 yard out-hitch. Flacco floated a bit of a duck, Boldin goes up for it and it hits him in the chest then bounces off.
1:01 Sherman broke it up. Wide right, Boldin runs a ~25yd fade up the right hash. Due to the trajectory the play becomes a jump ball at the goal line, Sherman got his hand on it solidly. Great play. Not the type of route we'll see Sunday.

4th Qtr

12:29 Completed for 2yds, short left, tkl by LB. No play due to unrelated penalty on the play.
11:29 3rd and 3, Boldin lines up slot left. He runs a 5yd out, is bracketed by Browner and another defender but has separation between them. It's bad choice by Flacco and he missed him by 1 nautical mile. The pass flew past everybody and dribbled along the ground. Browner is given credit for the breakup up above, but nobody touched it.
7:34 INC deep middle.
7:20 INC Illegal contact on Roy Lewis.
6:45 Roughness penalty on Kam. Seam rout from wide left. Boldin got his hands on it, Kam lays cheap wood, helmet-helmet as ball arrives. Flags fly, Boldin pops up golf-clapping, Kam writhes on the ground suffering his mistake, trainers come out.

    Summary of Targets

    14 total targets

    3 Complete

    4 Incomplete

    1 Dropped

    3 Broken up

    3 Penalized

So, yeah, 2 catches for 22. 1 target was intercepted because Flacco can't throw past an unblocked DE. 2 DPI's on Browner then Roy Lewis. 1 Roughness penalty that backfired on Kam. 1 drop. 4 bad passes or decisions. And 3 good defensive plays, 2 by Sherman.

Browner is out for this game, and despite what other's may say, yes it will impact the game. Boldin is now free to move around the LOS and away from Sherman, who is likely now the only player on their defense with the length to make up Boldin's size. If Boldin can get away from Sherman when lining up and have some success, Seattle may have to slide coverage towards him. Since we already know they'll be sliding coverage towards Vernon, we may make them do the splits and insert Vance McDonald right up the seam. Speaking of tight ends, Seattle's defense is much better now than it was then, but their scheme hasn't changed much.

Then, as now, there is a susceptibility to tight ends in the short to intermediate middle. For example, in this loss, Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta were targeted over the middle of the field 11 times, catching 8 for 105yds and 1 TD. On the day, individually, Dickson went 10/79/2 and Pitta 4/49, for a combined TE production of 14/128/1.

Yep, sounds about right. Please leave rec's and free beers!
