My take on two of Kaep's INTs tonight...

I think that we all can acknowledge that Kaep did not have a good game. The O-Line did not do their job tonight, and it affected the running and passing play the entire game. It was a horrible showing by the entire offense. It was actually shocking. By no means am I defending Kaep with this post. He forced balls into coverage and deserved the INTs that he did throw. Yet I did want to point out that two of those three INTs could be partially blamed on the play of another 49er...

The first INT on the goal line: A miss read by Kaep. He definitely thought it was man coverage, which is why he threw the out route to Vernon. The zone allowed the CB to come over and make a play. The ball gets tipped and that is that. My initial thought was that Kaep over threw Vernon by about a yard and a half, and that if he hits him on the numbers it is a TD. But when I go back and watch the replay, I see something else that comes into play. Vernon makes his cut on the out route and actually starts to stutter step as Kaep is throwing the ball. This stutter seems to be the difference in the accuracy of the pass. If Vernon had made his cut and taken a normal stride or two, the ball would have hit him on the numbers. But it almost seemed as if he was trying to sit down in the open area between the LB and the CB. Now I obviously do not know the exact route that VD was supposed to run on that play, but the replay leaves me to believe it comes down to one of three things. First, it is just a poor throw by Kaep. Next, there could have been some miss communication between Kaep and VD on the type of route he was supposed to run; Kaep thinking it was a straight out route and VD thinking it was an option "find the open space" route. Or this falls on Vernon. Was he worried about the hit he was going to take is he kept running full speed, considering the CB was right on top of him as it was? Or was he just being lazy with his route running, not thinking the ball was coming to him? After watching the rest of the game, I am leaning toward the last option. This also leads me to the next INT in question.

The long pass intercepted by Sherman: An under throw by Kaep. He should have never even thrown that ball. The throwing motion looked weird, the ball came out funny, it hung up in the air forever, and Sherman made the play. It was an extremely easy play, especially for the self-proclaimed best CB in the NFL. But again when I watched the replay I screamed out loud "What the (site decorum) was Vernon Davis doing!!!???" Sure it was a poorly thrown ball, and sure he had the opposing team’s best CB covering him. But he literally stopped running and stood there while Sherman jumped up and caught the pass. No attempt was made to come back to the ball. No attempt was made to knock the ball out of Sherman’s hands. And then Sherman begins to return the pick and VD half-butt chased him for a few yards before he grabbed his hamstring, not to see the field again for the rest of the game. That was a joke of a play by one of our veterans, a respected player on the team. He put absolutely no effort into that play. If he did try at all does Sherman still make the play? Most likely, because it was that bad of a throw by Kaep. But come on, your down, on the road, against the Seahawks, and you don't even try? If I was Kaep, I would have to seriously consider throwing a ball to VD in a 50/50 situation ever again after seeing the effort that he put into that play.

Again, this is not a post in defense of Kaep. He deserved the three picks that he threw tonight. He especially deserved the last one; a pass 5 yards over the head of the receiver. But the play by Vernon Davis on two of those interceptions definitely left me scratching my head...
