The NFC west has made a two year change that many in the league have viewed as miraculous, two years ago the division was laughingly called the NFC worst. The 49ers were pathetically inept with a sadly inept head coach in Mike Singletary and a horrible offensive coordinator in Jimmy Raye. People complain about clock issues now but I remember Jimmy Rayes second year as OC how one game we had 3 delay of game penalties almost in a row and this was a home game. When asked what the delay was it was stated that Jimmy Raye had a hard time getting calls in on time, I can almost picture it Jimmy Raye with a huge stack of loose leaf notebook papers plays errantly scrawled across each sheet like a 4 year old holding a red crayon. Of course the stick is windy so regularly a page would get blown from the messy pile and Jimmy Raye would have to chase it down hoping it was the play that would provide some semblance of success to his pathetically inept offensive game plan, and of course as history has shown it was Frank Gore down the middle, all of the plays in his stack were. At the end of each game Jimmy Raye would have his press conference where he stammered and stumbled over each word and stared blankly at the camera as his false teeth started to fall out of his mouth due to the Polygrip wearing off. Every time I saw him give a press conference I could almost see it turn into one of the babyruth commercials of the 80s, I swear Jimmy Raye and Sloth from the Goonies could have been twins. Our previous head coaches crowning moment to his team was exposing his testicles to them and yelling about their poor performance, every time the team lost which was often the coach gave his famous retort, I'll have to go watch the film.
The NFC west has changed much since those times, the 49ers have made almost a complete change over in coaching staff we have a new OC a new DC and a new head coach, all of them are significant upgrades compared to the prior coaching staff, we have changed philosophies as a team as well the era of Frank Gores as the sole offensive star is over. Our offense is significantly upgraded though doing so has placed new stress on the defense before the team had little to no big play potential and every game was a slow plodding affair with Frank Gore being expected to total 80 percent of all offensive production. Now the team has a better receiving corps with a quarterback capable of torching defenses with both his legs and his arms. The 49ers have made a meteoric ascent from there current selves from widely being viewed as one of the worst teams in the NFC West to consistently being viewed as one of the best clubs in football. This change however isn't only exclusive to the 49ers though. Every team except for the Cardinals has vastly improved in the NFC West, with changes to defense coaching and quarterbacks each of these teams has significantly improved and shown that they can win any given week. The meteoric change in the NFC west can widely be attributed to three men Jeff Fisher, Pete Carrol, and Jim Harbaugh.
Out of the three coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher are the most accomplished with Pete Carrol entering into the NFL from an organization that his coaching practices disgraced at this time there are already rumblings in the NFL that he may be encouraging his players to use PEDs and that his cheating ways havent changed. This last week saw many crowning the seahawks as the kings of the NFL and many were applauding Pete Carrol as the best coach in the NFC west, there's an argument there I suppose. At this time he is the second least accomplished coach int he NFC west he has made it to the playoffs and that is it he has never made it to the super bowl like Jeff Fisher and Jim Harbaugh. His entire NFL career as a headcoach he has been in another coaches shadow, with the patriots he was in the legendary shadow of Bill Parcells and was ran out of town. Then he went to USC and left under controversial circumstances and has arrived in seatle, but his escape to seattle has doomed him again this time he is in Harbaughs' shadow, every time one speaks of his performance the comparisons to other better coaches always appears with the patriots it was Parcells with the Seahawks it s Harbaugh.
At this time it is possible that Jim Harbaugh is one of the best coaches in the NFL, arguments can easily be made in his favor. If you make a list of the top 5 or 10 NFL coaches it is very hard to keep Jim Harbaugh off the list. If you look at what he has accomplished in his two years as a head coach in the NFL its amazing. Then you take that and apply it to an organization that before him was an embarrassment in the and the division we were in was widely lauded as the NFL worst. Pete Carrol is not a bad coach, but coaches are graded by there accomplishments in the NFL at this time I will say that Pete Carrol is on Jim Schwartz level, he is constantly playing catch up with coach Harbaugh, grabbing on his coattails and trying to prove that he is the better coach. Unfortunately Pete Carrol does not have anything to prove that he is anything more than an average coach at this time, his team has not topped the NFC yet it has not made it to the super bowl at this time he is simply a mouse among giants that is loudly trumpeting his own greatness. Also if history serves as a lesson with Pete Carrol he isn't afraid of cheating to win, remember USC something rotten is going to come out of seattle.
