1981

Well. That hurt.

I'm not going to get into reasons why today was such a bust - we're gonna have at least 12 posts doing that in the next 4 hours. Rather, I'm going to try to be optimistic about things (like I did after the Seahawks match) and remind everyone of some history because, let's face it, history is awesome in general.

Remember that time we started out 1-2 in 1981? Sure, those were two losses on the road, not a home loss like today was, but that's still 1-2. It was our first season with Montana as the starter (he started something like 7 games in '80), and it was the start of Walsh's third year with the franchise - but, regardless of this, we lost Week 1 and Week 3 that year. Is Kap as good as Montana? Well, probably not - god only decides to descend to earth and play quarterback once every hundred years or so. Is Harbaugh the same kind of coach that Walsh was? Probably not, but give him time. Also, most people as smart as Walsh become nuclear physicists. Were the losses as bad as these past two? Probably not. But if people can say "a win's a win" we should be able to say "a loss is a loss." It teaches the team valuable lessons, they learn and improve.

These two losses hurt a lot. I wanted to find a brick wall just to have something to headbutt myself into a stupor (though I probably would've been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct if I had). But the season isn't over. We ain't out of this yet. We got more to say, and we'll shout it from the rooftops. We ain't out of this because in 1981, after going into Week 4 with a 1-2 record, we went on to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship with a play most people just call "The Catch" (I'm not going to be a condescending poster and explain this glorious moment). And, lest we forget, we won a Super Bowl after that. And this was well before Jerry Rice was around to catch everything thrown his way (that was the time god decided to play wide receiver once every 100 years - he can do both at once because he's god).

Will we win the Super Bowl this year? God only knows. I don't make predictions like that because it's bad luck. But this season isn't over, just like it wasn't in '81. Let's put the "faith" back in 49ers Faithful.
