No joke. Do it. Pull the trigger. We cannot afford to cede anymore ground in the division while merely hoping that Crabs, Super Mario, and VD come back full-strength in the near future. Our anemic passing game over the past couple weeks has proven that much, so I say do what the Bears did last year and trade for a top tier wide receiver that's currently on a shoddy team.
Who am I talking about? Guys like Vincent Jackson (Vjax) or Hakeem Nicks. I say Vjax on the high end because the Bucs are 0-3, coach Greg Schiano is facing a mutiny from his team and their QB Josh Freeman couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Now I don't know if we can fit Vjax cap wise, but the Bucs look to be an early disappointment this year and Schiano could get canned if things grow more toxic down there. Enter the 49ers with a 1st round draft pick offer for Vjax. It's a win-win for both sides. The Bucs unload an unused, top-tier, veteran, receiver and can rebuild for next year while the 49ers have legit receiving threats on both sides of the field, Boldin being the other.
On the lower end of the trade market, I'd say target Hakeem Nicks for a 2nd or even 3rd round pick. Like the Bucs, the Giants are 0-3 and look far more out of whack than the 49ers at 1-2. Now the Giants probably can't afford keep Nicks after this season (he's a free agent). The only concern with Nicks is that he has battled injuries, but when he's healthy, he's very helpful. It would be a low-risk and relatively cap-friendly move to revive what is essentially a dead receiving corps.
So if I'm GM Trent Baalke, I'd seriously consider making a move. After all, we got beat by a team this Sunday that pulled off an impressive trade that nobody saw coming.
