The San Francisco 49ers have plenty to deal with over the coming week (hopefully weekS), but there is also future business to attend to. The 49ers signed three players to reserve/future contracts today. They are wide receiver David Reed, wide receiver DeMarco Sampson and defensive tackle Christian Tupou. The 49ers have not announced the moves yet, but they appeared on the NFL's daily transaction report.
A reserve/future contract basically locks up the player for the upcoming season. A player can sign this kind of contract if he was not on the 53-man active roster at the end of the previous season. Players on the active roster that have contracts expiring do not become free agents until the new league year starts on March 12.
Last year's group included Lamar Divens, WR Ricardo Lockette, OG Al Netter, LB Nate Stupar, S Michael Thomas OG Wayne Tribue and OT Kenny Wiggins. The year before, the most notable name was linebacker Michael Wilhoite.
When the 49ers announce the moves, they'll include some bio information. In the meantime, here are a few minor details. Reed was last with the Indianapolis Colts, who cut him on November 26. Reed had previously been with the Baltimore Ravens, but Baltimore traded him to the Colts last August for Delone Carter. Stampede Blue wrote something about about him when he was released, and it was not overly inspiring.
Sampson was signed by the Buffalo Bills back in May. He was a seventh round pick of the Cardinals in 2011, and appeared in 12 games as a rookie. He did not make the roster in 2012, and ended up spending some time with the Philadelphia Eagles. Here's a brief scouting report on Sampson from before the draft.
Tupou signed with the Chicago Bears after the 2013 NFL Draft. He started the season on their practice squad, and was elevated to the 53-man roster in October. He was released during Week 17, and then signed with the Colts practice squad on January 3. He was released from the practice squad a few days later.
