Multiple reports from the likes of Jay Glazer, Adam Schefter and others indicate the Minnesota Vikings are going to hire Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer as their next head coach. This is a big deal because 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula had both interviewed for the position.
I feel bad for Roman and Tomsula as they deserve more opportunities, but I'm plenty happy with the likelihood increasing that they stick around for another year. I know people take issue with some of Greg Roman's play-calling, but the 49ers are in their third straight NFC Championship Game, and part of the reason for that is what the offense can do on occasion.
The only remaining job available is the Cleveland Browns. They are taking their time in the process, and there are no reports they have contacted the 49ers about interviewing their assistants. They could very well be waiting for one or more of the remaining playoff teams to get knocked out, so we will need to wait and see what the coming weeks bring. For this week though, at least the Vikings news is off the table.
