Well, I can't wait for Sunday. And I need to occupy my time with something other than recycled Niners-Seahawks stories. So, Mock draft time! Clearly, our biggest needs are going to be in the secondary and in the receiving corps. We will probably have to start at least one rookie in the secondary next year (that could be a nickel CB or a SS). We simply can't afford a lot of the guys in our secondary with looming cap constraints. I see Whitner, Brown, and Rogers all leaving -- perhaps Rogers takes a huge paycut and stays.
My #1 criteria for wide receivers is college production -- drafting on physical attributes is risky and historically most busts were athlete gambles. After you sort by production, you either draft a split end, a flanker, a slot receiver, or a tight end. its that simple.
So, here we go.
|32||Jordan Matthews||WR||Vanderbilt||I am on the fence between Matthews, Adams, and Robinson at #32; All three have excellent college production and have size, which are my two biggest criteria. However, Matthews has played against a much higher level of competition in the SEC and for that he's the pick
|56||Kyle Fuller||CB||Virginia Tech||Excellent Tackler, beats blocks, natural athlete, excellent run defender, super ball skills, sub-4.5 40 for being over 6 feet tall
|64||EJ Gaines||CB||Missouri||Another Corner - I expect to be depleted in the secondary this offseason. Gaines has great speed and tackles well
|77||Craig Loston||S||LSU||Will start as a rookie; reunited with Reid. Similar players, perhaps interchangeable, although Reid has much better measurables
|96||Tyler Larsen||C||Utah State||Great Run blocker, excellent fit for our system. Can also play guard
|C||Brandon Coleman||WR||Rutgers||Huge Possession WR. I don't know why some early mocks have him going higher -- he's a 3rd or 4th rounder
|128||Marcel Jensen||TE||Fresno State||Talented kid who also plays great special teams. Didn't see the ball enough this year
|160||Aaron Murray||QB||Georgia||Recovering from injury - good backup prospect.
|192||Charles Leno||OT||Boise State||Backup tackle prospect
|219||Anthony Fera||K||Texas||Save some money, go with a rookie
|220||Kevin Norwood||WR||Alabama||decent late round prospect
|224||Keith Reaser||CB||FAU||good speed
