The San Francisco 49ers announced some pretty big news Tuesday afternoon. Team president Gideon Yu is stepping down from his role, but will remain a co-owner in the franchise. Chief Operating Officer Paraag Marathe will take over as team president, and Al Guido will be promoted to COO from his role as the chief sales man for the new stadium.
Behind Jed York, Gideon Yu was arguably the most important person in the process to get Levi's Stadium financed and built. Yu's extensive experience in Silicon Valley put him in a unique position to help the 49ers get the new stadium built. Given the tireless efforts that likely required, I can only imagine he is ready to take a break. All 49ers fans should be thankful for the work Gideon Yu has done the last couple years.
Given Yu's departure, it is not at all surprising that Paraag Marathe is taking over as team president. He has been with the franchise for 13 years, working his way up from football operations analytics, to chief contract negotiator, to COO. Although he started on the football side, Marathe has had a chance to work extensively on the business side of things in recent years. Aside from Jed, I doubt anybody knows this franchise better than Paraag Marathe.
And given his continued rise, it seems fitting to roll out an old bit of photoshop wjackalope put together:
