49ers hire Tim Ryan to replace Eric Davis as radio color analyst

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers have replaced Eric Davis as their radio color guy due to the logistics of his work with NFL Network. We've got the details on Tim Ryan as the new color analyst with Ted Robinson.

Wednesday morning, the San Francisco 49ers announced a change to their radio broadcast booth. Tim Ryan will replace Eric Davis as the color analyst alongside current play-by-play man Ted Robinson.

Davis has spent the last three seasons in the role, but the logistics of the situation required change. Davis also works for NFL Network with their NFLAM show in Los Angeles. Davis told Matt Maiocco that the 49ers are looking to do more of an in-house media format that would require him being at the site almost every day. Given his commitment to NFL Network, this would not be feasible.

Ryan takes over having already spent the last three seasons handling television color work for 49ers preseason games. He has radio experience currently working as an analyst for Westwood One. He has also done work for NFL on FOX and SiriusXM NFL Radio.

I've seen some positive opinions about Ryan's work, but it's a mixed bag. As Bay Area Sports Guy pointed out, Sports on Earth listed him among their worst. They were discussing him along with his regular season partner, Chris Myers, but there was enough of his own individual issues that some will be dismayed by this hire.

I don't listen to the radio broadcasts, so my opinion is not exactly the most valuable in this situation. I think the 49ers could have done worse than Ryan, and I think he could be considered a bit of an acquired taste. And hopefully, spending time with a great play-by-play guy like Ted Robinson will help improve. Anything is better than Chris Myers, who is abysmal when it comes to play-by-play.

For now, feel free to enjoy two of the more notable radio calls by Eric Davis:
