Matt Maiocco is reporting the San Francisco 49ers haul of draft picks in 2014 will be one less than we thought. This past year, the 49ers traded linebacker Cam Johnson to the Indianapolis Colts for a seventh round pick. The initial belief was that this pick was a 2014 seventh round pick. According to Maiocco, the pick is a 2015 seventh rounder.
The 49ers still have 11 picks in the draft, with a 12th expected in compensation for Dashon Goldson's departure. It gives them just a little less maneuverability, but I think it's safe to say Trent Baalke will find a way to add some picks to the haul. Here is how the picks stand as of today, with the overall pick number added to the first five picks.
1. First round: own - No. 30
2. Second round: Chiefs (Alex Smith trade) - No. 24 (No. 56 overall)
3. Second round: own - No. 29 (No. 61 overall)
4. Third round: Titans (2013 draft trade) - No. 13 (No. 77 overall)
5. Third round: own - No. 30 (No. 94 overall)
6. Third round: Compensatory based on Dashon Goldson departure and free agency equation
7. Fourth round: own - No. 29
8. Fifth round: own - No. 30
9. Sixth round: own - No. 29
10. Seventh round: Saints (Parys Haralson trade) - No. 27
11. Seventh round: Panthers (Colin Jones trade) - No. 28
12. Seventh round: own - No. 30
Given Trent Baalke's penchant for wheeling and dealing, how many actual picks do you think the 49ers end up making in May? The 49ers showed they are willing to stash guys for the future, but it remains to be seen if they'll roll with a similar strategy in 2014. Maybe they surprise and make some particularly bold moves up the draft board.
