Golden Nuggets: Exciting Offseason Coming Soon

Wednesday, January 29, 2014 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from around the Internet.

The Niners offense should be interesting to see next year. The biggest difference we will see is Frank Gore taking much less of the running load. At 30 years old, Frank has reached the age where running backs wear down. The grind of being an NFL running back finally catches up with players and with some potential in the depth chart, it’s time to see what the Niners have behind their franchise rushing leader. With Lattimore coming back from injury and seeing what he did in college, I think he has a legitimate shot at being Gore 2.0. Next year’s Niners backfield will be a crowded one with Gore, Lattimore, and Hunter all fighting for touches.

The receiver position could be a position that looks really different next year depending on free agency. The general opinion is that the Niners want to keep Boldin around another year. He’s a tough, physical receiver that has great hands and we saw that Kaepernick trusted him. What is really missing in the receiver group is a big target that can outjump defenders for balls. While both Jon Baldwin and Kassim Osgood are tall receivers, Harbaugh rarely used them on offense. The feeling is that Baalke and Harbaugh will draft a receiver that can stretch the field as well as have the height to challenge for jumpballs in the mold of Megatron and Larry Fitzgerald. Michael Crabtree will remain Kaepernick’s #1 target, but it would be nice to see a 6’3-6’5 receiver use his body to make catches that convert big 3rd downs or touchdowns.
