Texas hires Charlie Strong, Penn State talking to Al Golden, James Franklin

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The University of Texas has reportedly hired Charlie Strong to be their next head coach. Penn State is reportedly talking with James Franklin and Al Golden, with hopes of hiring someone within days. What does all this mean for the 49ers coaching staff?

The San Francisco 49ers have plenty to deal with on Sunday, but in the meantime, there is some pertinent information from the college ranks. Multiple reports indicate the University of Texas is hiring Charlie Strong as their next head coach. There are some reports indicating Strong is still talking with Louisville, but it sounds like a deal will likely be announced on Sunday.

In other news, Penn State is narrowing their search down, and is apparently looking to hire a new coach within days. University of Miami coach Al Golden is interviewing, and there have been some tweets that he will get the job. However, there are also reports that Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin will also interview on Sunday.

The Texas job is noteworthy because Jim Harbaugh was connected to it briefly last month. Rumors were circulating, but Texas found themselves having to consider a variety of options as potential candidates bowed out, including Jim Harbaugh according to some reports.

In light of the reported hiring of Strong, @LSUFreek put together a fantastic "Blazing Saddles"-based GIF. If you haven't seen Blazing Saddles, you'll have no idea what's going on, but trust me, it's funny.

As for the Penn State news, if the Nittany Lions are looking to hire someone within days, Greg Roman would likely seem to be off their radar. That could change based on Sunday's outcome, but this would seem to remove the potential for Roman to Penn State. Of course, it could open up Roman-to-Miami, or Roman-to-Vanderbilt rumors, but we can deal with that on another day.

Mostly I just wanted to share the GIF, but the news itself is noteworthy. You're welcome to ignore it and just focus on 49ers-Packers, but if you want to discuss it, you're more than welcome.
