Phil Dawson kick almost blocked, but there was an offsides flag on the play

The 49ers won on a last second field goal by Phil Dawson. It was almost blocked, but it is worth noting there was an offsides flag on the play.

The quick storyline after the game was how close Phil Dawson's field goal came to getting blocked. Davon House came busting in on the left side of the line and Dawson's kick went right through his arms:

Gbarms

It is worth noting that the reason House got so close to a block was because he was flagged for jumping offsides. The penalty was declined, but in the end of game chaos, the broadcasters missed it. 49ers social media man Taylor Price tweeted out this Vine, in which you can see the flag flying.

Obviously the 49ers would have had to re-kick had there been a block. It would have been a 28-yarder, but in that weather there are no gimmes. Fortunately we didn't have to see how that would play out. The 49ers advanced and that's that. It's pretty cool that Dawson got a chance to win his first ever playoff game.

It was not the prettiest of days for special teams on either side. Neither kicker could get much distance on kickoffs, and both punters struggled much of the day. Fortunately for the 49ers, LaMichael James stepped up, and made some solid plays in the return game. He had a 37-yard return on the drive that ended with Vernon Davis' touchdown. He also had a pair of ten-yard punt returns, and most importantly, he held onto the ball.

The 49ers travel to Carolina next week, and it will likely be downright tropical compared to these conditions. Even with a cross-country flight from SF to Charlotte, the weather change will be nice.
