In case you didn't hear it hammered home over and over again, it was really cold Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field. The San Francisco 49ers edged out the Green Bay Packers 23-20, and for the most part, the cold really didn't seem to be much of an issue. The traction was bad on the nasty turf at Lambeau, but all in all, with no precipitation to really mess things up, the game was relatively clean (we'll ignore the non-flags throughout).
The 49ers departed Wisconsin last night to get back home to Santa Clara. They were able to warm up on the flight, and will not have to worry about cold weather in Charlotte next week. However, the cold weather factor is not yet entirely in the rear view mirror. 49ers kicker Phil Dawson used to play for the Cleveland Browns, and had plenty of experience in cold weather football. He talked to Mindi Bach after the game, and had some interesting comments:
#49ers Phil Dawson, who played in plenty of freezing games in 14 yrs w/ Cleveland, says taking time to recover from this game is vital— Mindi Bach (@MBachCSN) January 6, 2014
Dawson says #49ers players' bodies will tingle for a day or two after the long exposure to the cold. Rest, sleep & eating well key this week— Mindi Bach (@MBachCSN) January 6, 2014
The 49ers players will be available in the locker room on Tuesday, and then the first full practice session with practice participation reports is Wednesday. The big question is how the 49ers will respond next Sunday against the Panthers. Will they come out slow and take some time to get going? Last year in the NFC title game the 49ers fell behind 17-0 in a noon PT start. This year, they've got the earlier start coming off a physically tough game against the Packers.
The 49ers can overcome it, but I really have no idea what to expect as far as how the 49ers come out of the gate against Carolina. Do you expect much impact?
