The San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers square off this Sunday on FOX, and it is not too surprising that it gets the No. 1 FOX crew. Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver will cover the game. Last week, Erin Andrews was part of this crew. There is only one sideline reporter this week because FOX is covering both divisional round games. Last week, NBC got one NFC Wild Card game and one AFC Wild Card game.
It was amusing how quickly people lost their mind on Twitter when I mentioned Buck and Aikman would cover the game. People think both are biased against the 49ers, and more or less openly cheer for the Packers. I went back and took a quick listen to some of the bigger gains and scores, and I don't think I really heard that. I don't recall it during the game, although obviously Aaron Rodgers big escape from a sack (on the offensive holding play) got a little extra excitement. I think that was as much because it was a crazy play, as it was because it was Rodgers.
I'm sure I won't change opinions with this, but I really don't think Buck and Aikman are as bad as many think. They're not my favorite crew by any stretch, but they're solid and I think professional enough. Buck's emotion is sometimes lacking, which is why I like a guy like Gus Johnson doing football play-by-play. But other than that, I just don't think they're that awful.
Speaking of Buck and Aikman, I once again recommend checking out this SB Nation long form about the announcing duo.
