49ers-Panthers injury report: Demarcus Dobbs, Carlos Rogers your notable DNPs

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers and Panthers submitted their Wednesday practice participation reports for Sunday's divisional round matchup. We break down the notable names.

The San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers released their first practice participation reports of the week. The divisional round opponents are getting healthier, but each has a player or two of note on the report.

The 49ers hd four players not practicing on Wednesday. Jonathan Goodwin and Justin Smith each got their usual veteran's day of rest. Goodwin is pretty much 100 percent, while Smith is dealing with a shoulder thing. Smith has had the shoulder issue most of the season, and at this point he is likely going to be dealing with it for the remainder of his career.

The two notable DNPs on the report are Demarcus Dobbs and Carlos Rogers. Dobbs left Sunday's game at one point with a knee injury. If Dobbs cannot go, Tony Jerod-Eddie is likely to see more reserve playing time. Quinton Dial could be activated if the 49ers want to get two reserves along the line. As Matt Barrows pointed out on Twitter, the team could also activate Nick Moody to handle Dobbs' special teams work.

Rogers also sat out practice as he continues working back from a hamstring strain. He suffered the injury in Week 17, and was a DNP all last week. He was inactive against the Packers, and this is not exactly a good start toward playing on Sunday against the Panthers. Rogers mentioned on Tuesday that he was back running, but we'll have to wait and see what Thursday and Friday brings. Vic Fangio addresses the media Thursday, and I'm sure he'll get a Rogers question.

On the Panthers side of things, Steve Smith and Colin Cole were both limited participants in practice, while Jonathan Stewart was a full participant. Smith is an important part of the Panthers passing game. Stewart can be important to the Panthers run game, but he's dealt with injuries much of the season. Stewart has been better than DeAngelo Williams when healthy, but Stewart has played 15 total games over the last two regular season games. We'll see what kind of impact he makes Sunday.
