Of Course it Was a Blowout!

Our beloved team was thoroughly destroyed last Sunday night, in pretty much every facet of the game. Ouch. The Denver Broncos and Peyton, had their way with our defense. It wasn't pretty, it was hard to watch, and it was expected.

It would have been great to pull an upset, but did anyone really expect that to happen? If you really did, ask yourself why. Here are a number of reasons why it was obvious we would lose, and why that blowout is nothing to be concerned about.

1) Peyton Manning, sniffing a record, with arguably the best receiving corps in the NFL. Best (regular season) QB in the game, with top tier weapons, in a game that really didn't matter for them. Peyton is great mid-season when there is really nothing on the line for him. This spells doom for any defense in the league, which brings me to points 2 and 3.

2) A 49ers team, coming off a short week, off a divisional game, on a consecutive road game, traveling to face one of the current best teams in the NFL. Plug in a large number of other good teams in place of Denver and you still have a likely loss. You could argue that great teams overcome this. You could also just accept the fact that most any team, good or bad, is not likely to win in this situation.

3) Injuries. To me this game is still likely a loss even if we had Aldon, Bowman, Willis, Dorsey, Iupati, Culliver, and Ward. Those are just the players who didn't even play. We had Vernon, A. Davis, and Brock playing banged up/freshly off of injury.

4) We just weren't on. This happens to teams, even if people tend to use it as an excuse. Add in that Denver definitely was on. This in and of itself doesn't mean we would have won if we were on, but if for whatever reason a team is going to beat Denver at Mile High, they are most likely going to have to be playing on.

5) Denver has a stout defense. If it isn't enough that they have Peyton Manning, so far they have proven to have a very good defense. The addition of Ware to go alongside Von Miller is about as scary as it sounded when they picked him up. This going up against our banged up and average when healthy O-line with a young QB? Not a combination I like.

I am not panicking over this loss. I don't even think this shows that the "9ers can't beat a good team" or other such criticism. We lost a game that by all accounts we should have, and given the circumstances a blow out makes sense. I say any one of the above listed scenarios make a game like this lean towards a loss, but a combination of all!? Of course it was a blow out.

What are some reasons that we could have won this game? Assuming we can't really change a number of the conditions this game presents just in and of itself, what reasons did we have to be optimistic? The only thing I can think of is if Denver just straight crapped the bed. What are your thoughts. Can you think of any team that could win under those circumstances? Flip the script with Denver. What if they were coming to us with 7 starters out after a short week divisional game while we are fully healthy? Do they win that game?
