Oakland Raiders sign Kory Sheets, some kind of Niners Nation 'Inception' is at hand

Jeff Gross

The Oakland Raiders have signed longtime Niners Nation running back favorite Kory Sheets! Oh, it was only a matter of time.

The NFL transaction report was just released, and a familiar name was on it. Former 49ers practice squad running back, and recent CFL Grey Cup MVP Kory Sheets signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders. KSWOF takes on a whole new tone!

Many of you already know the story of Kory Sheets, but if you do not, James Brady put together an explanation of it back in 2012. Back in 2009, the 49ers signed Kory Sheets as an undrafted free agent. He put up big numbers in the preseason, but was cut and eventually signed to the practice squad. He was eventually released from the practice squad, and a reader was not pleased with it. This person created the username KORY SHEETS WAS OUR FUTURE and wrote a FanPost ranting about the decision. It was written in all caps and at one point included a reference to the mafia.

Sheets bounced around the NFL before ending up in Canada. He put together a strong 2013 season, and it got him a tryout, and now contract with the Raiders. Oakland's running back depth chart is not particularly deep, which opens the door for some chances. Prior to signing Sheets, the depth chart included Darren McFadden, Rashad Jennings, and Jeremy Stewart, with Latavius Murray coming off injured reserve. Given that McFadden may not be long for the Raiders, I suspect they'll draft a running back in May. There will be a lot of competition, but maybe Sheets can earn a spot. The 49ers face the Raiders in 2014, so maybe we can see him get a crack at the 49ers run D!

And I promise we will not be including frequent KSWOF updates on his Raiders status. Just one or two here or there!
