Fooch's Update: Ian Rapoport had this to say:
Apparently Pro Football Talk decided Friday afternoon was the best time to shake things up. Florio is reporting that multiple league sources told him "the Cleveland Browns nearly pulled off a trade with the 49ers for the rights to coach Jim Harbaugh." The deal apparently would have involved multiple draft picks, but in the end, Harbaugh decided he wanted to stick with the 49ers.
I'm poking around on my own on this one, because I honestly don't know what to make of this. There are now several people claiming they heard word of this previously but could not get a second source on it. One Cleveland radio guy is claiming when the Browns asked about interviewing Greg Roman and Jim Tomsula, Harbaugh expressed interest himself. Needless to say, I generally am not one to believe radio guys when they claim to have this kind of information. Tim Kawakami did make one good point about how Mike Lombardi (previous GM) is buddies with Harbaugh and that could explain some of it as well.
On the one hand, it would be easy to call BS on this story and just move on. Unfortunately, this combined with the random University of Texas rumors mean we are probably going to deal with this kind of nonsense every year. I suppose it could quiet when Harbaugh eventually signs an extension, but for now, I have a hunch we're going to hear the random rumors floating. Something like this doesn't make a lot of sense, but that doesn't mean it still won't be out there year in and year out.
Is this Harbaugh's agent trying to push on negotiations for Harbaugh's next contract? That strikes me as the only thing that makes sense. I could make up a lot of reasons, but Occam's Razor would seem to make that the most likely of reasons. But who really knows. Maybe it's just the Browns continuing to cover their butt after what seemed like a highly embarrassing month of running around in circles.
If the 49ers were ever to trade Harbaugh, it's not like they would be in a tough situation for finding a new head coach. They've got a brand new stadium, a roster loaded with All Pros, and an owner willing to spend money. I'd be happy sticking with Jim Harbaugh, but if he ever did depart, it would not exactly be the end of the world. But hopefully that's not something we have to deal with in the near future.
