49ers Mock Draft

The Niners have 3 main needs. WR, CB, and C. Luckily, those are three of the deepest positions in this draft.

Note: This draft operates on the assumption that we resign Donte Whitner.

We have 12 picks, including 5 of the top 100. This is nothing but awesome. We have a chance to pick up some fantastic talent here. Here are the picks as they stand today:

1 (30)
2 (56)
2 (61)
3 (77)
3 (94)
4 (125)
4 (Comp)
5 (158)
6 (189)
7 (219)
7 (220)
7 (222)

Our first three picks should be used to address our three main needs, in my estimation, and I think there's a way to do that effectively. First, the best value at 30 clearly isn't at C or CB, as there isn't any talent at those positions at that point in the draft as far as I can tell (except Bradley Roby, who I really don't like). The best value, to me, is at WR, but there are two obstacles. The Panthers and Patriots both pick directly in front of us and are in dire need of receivers. For this reason, I propose that we jump them. The Saints share basically no needs with the Patriots and Panthers, so they shouldn't have a problem trading down a few spots. We send our first and sixth round picks to move up to 27. With any luck, that gives us whoever is left between Jordan Matthews and Brandin Cooks, preferably Matthews.

1 (27): Jordan Matthews or Brandin Cooks
2 (56)
2 (61)
3 (77)
3 (94)
4 (125)
4 (Comp)
5 (158)
7 (219)
7 (220)
7 (222)

Next, we still need C and CB. 56 is clearly too early for a center though, so this pick should be a CB. I think we have two options at CB with this pick. First, we can trade the Chiefs second, our first 7th, and LMJ to the Titans, who don't need anybody from the top of the second (and who could use some RB depth), for pick number 43. With that pick, we take Kyle Fuller. Second, we can stand pat and take Pierre Desir. These two plans seem like a tie to me, so we wait to see how the combine goes tomorrow morning to decide.

1 (27): Jordan Matthews or Brandin Cooks
2 (56): Pierre Desir / 2 (43): Kyle Fuller
2 (61)
3 (77)
3 (94)
4 (125)
4 (Comp)
5 (158)
7 (219): Trade / Kyle Fuller
7 (220)
7 (222)

Now it's time for a center. Travis Swanson may be gone by now, but I like Weston Richburg more. It's that simple.

1 (27): Jordan Matthews or Brandin Cooks
2 (56): Pierre Desir / 2 (43): Kyle Fuller
2 (61): Weston Richburg
3 (77)
3 (94)
4 (125)
4 (Comp)
5 (158)
7 (219): Trade / Kyle Fuller
7 (220)
7 (222)

Now that we've taken care of our three main needs, it's time for depth. At 77, I think we can trade down and snag either Ahmad Dixon or Dion Bailey, either of whom can be the successor to Whitner in time. I'm sure we can find a team in the top end of the non-playoff teams prepared to trade up, and get a future pick in the process. At 94, we can grab an insurance policy on our ILB depth with Chris Borland or, if he isn't there, Shane Skov.

1 (27): Jordan Matthews or Brandin Cooks
2 (56): Pierre Desir / 2 (43): Kyle Fuller
2 (61): Weston Richburg
3 (85ish): Ahmad Dixon or Dion Bailey
3 (94): Chris Borland or Shane Skov
4 (125)
4 (Comp)
5 (158)
7 (219): Trade / Kyle Fuller
7 (220)
7 (222)

Now it's time for a pass rusher. You can NEVER have enough. Josh Mauro, a 3-4 DE, should be around for our fourth rounder. Backup QB is also a need, but there isn't a lot of depth in this draft until the late rounds, so I like David Fales as much as anybody here. QB is meh past the top in this draft. Works for me.

1 (27): Jordan Matthews or Brandin Cooks
2 (56): Pierre Desir / 2 (43): Kyle Fuller
2 (61): Weston Richburg
3 (85ish): Ahmad Dixon or Dion Bailey
3 (94): Chris Borland or Shane Skov
4 (125): Josh Mauro
4 (Comp): David Fales
5 (158)
7 (219): Trade / Kyle Fuller
7 (220)
7 (222)

You may remember, we traded LMJ earlier in this draft process. Now we need a return man. The most explosive one in this draft is Dri Archer, and additionally, he can backup all the skill positions on offense. Man, he has some great tape from college at all his positions.

1 (27): Jordan Matthews or Brandin Cooks
2 (56): Pierre Desir / 2 (43): Kyle Fuller
2 (61): Weston Richburg
3 (85ish): Ahmad Dixon or Dion Bailey
3 (94): Chris Borland or Shane Skov
4 (125): Josh Mauro
4 (Comp): David Fales
5 (158): Dri Archer
7 (219): Trade / Kyle Fuller
7 (220)
7 (222)

The 7th round holds some redshirts for us. Aaron Colvin, of course, should be a target to be redshirted. I also like Jerrick McKinnon for the practice squad to find his true position. We can afford to stash him as an athlete. Yes, he's the guy who singlehandedly handed the Florida Gators their first loss to an FCS team in many, many years on a team that didn't complete any of their three pass attempts in the game. He's played basically every position other than lineman on both sides of the ball. The pick that could be used for Kyle Fuller can be traded for a 6th or 7th next year. We really don't need it.

1 (27): Jordan Matthews or Brandin Cooks
2 (56): Pierre Desir / 2 (43): Kyle Fuller
2 (61): Weston Richburg
3 (85ish): Ahmad Dixon or Dion Bailey
3 (94): Chris Borland or Shane Skov
4 (125): Josh Mauro
4 (Comp): David Fales
5 (158): Dri Archer
7 (219): Trade / Kyle Fuller
7 (220): Aaron Colvin
7 (222): Jerrick McKinnon

This draft only makes us refill 8 roster spots, 5 or 6 of which will be vacated by LMJ, Carlos Rogers, Jonathan Goodwin, Colt McCoy, NaVorro Bowman on PUP, and probably Jon Baldwin, whose renegotiated contract means little. Not a lot of unpredicted roster turnover.

P.S. I did this off the top of my head. It probably makes no sense.
