With the news that Daniel Kilgore will be a 49er through 2017, the center position gets more interesting.
Kilgore played all 19 games in 2013, being featured as an extra blocker. His ability to play guard and center gives the team flexibility, and this extension may simply be a depth move. But with Jonathan Goodwin expected to walk this offseason and Mike Iupati expected to walk next year, there will be opportunities for Kilgore to start in the next year or two.
He could slide into the RG position in 2015, with Alex Boone taking over LG. Or he could compete for the starting center job, possibly as early as this year. Harbaugh and Co. do love veterans with experience in their system, so it's possible he would at least be able to compete with whichever center the 49ers draft in 2014.
His presence may simply mean that the team can wait a while to snag a center in this year's draft, or it could mean that we simply have a versatile depth guy locked up.
