ESPN and CSN Bay Area are reporting that an NFL spokesman informed them that the San Francisco 49ers were warned, but not fined for the sideline incident involving Seattle Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane. In case you forgot about the play, here's a GIF of it:
As you can see, Lane goes out bounds during his run down the field as a gunner. A gunner is allowed to go out of bounds, but has to quickly work to get back in. As Lane is coming back in, he runs into a member of the 49ers. We see the two collide and Lane goes down. He got back up and was quickly back in the play.
There was discussion after the game, with accusations of a clothesline by the unnamed 49er. Jim Harbaugh was asked about the incident during his season-ending press conference. Harbaugh believed it was a matter of the person turning into Lane and just reacting in the moment. Personally, I think something may have happened, but the guy with red sleeves blocks enough of it that it would be hard to justify a fine. I think you could interpret it as the 49er maybe lowering his shoulder. But I also think you could interpret as incidental contact.
Whatever the case, this fine would seem to indicate the NFL thinks something was a little shady, but can't prove it enough to justify a fine. But it's all rigged anyway, so it doesn't matter, right?!
