National Signing Day history: A look back at the 49ers coming out of high school

Mike Zarrilli

It's National Signing Day, so let's check out the 49ers roster and their recruiting history.

If you are a college football fan, Wednesday is kind of a huge day. It marks 2014 National Signing Day, which is the first day a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent with an NCAA school. The Internet will be abuzz with various recruits picking and choosing amongst three hats. I'd love to see one play some kind of three-card monte with the hats. I'm sure the chosen school would love that.

In light of this big day for college fans, I decided to go back and check out the recruiting info on each member of the 49ers. I searched their name + to get an idea of their rating out of five stars when they committed to their given college. I realize there are other options for finding recruiting rankings, but was the easiest to find the information.

I went through the entire roster, including current players that will hit free agency, and below is a table I came up with, ranked in order of stars. The players listed as N/A graduated from high school before the rating system showed up on the Internet. The class of 2002 was generally the easiest to find info on. I'm pretty sure Anquan Boldin and Frank Gore were 5-star recruits. I included some high school details for those N/A players.

The 49ers have at least five players that came out of school as 5-star recruits. On the other end, they have at least ten players that were zero-star recruits. It would be interesting to do a comparison of all the NFL teams. I think the more interesting detail would be how many zero-, one- and two-star recruits are on each team. It would be interesting to know how many under-the-radar players came out of nowhere and became stars in some form or fashion.
