Happy Thursday everyone, there's not a whole bunch going on in niner land right now. The whole league is transitioning from the Superbowl to the offseason. We have already seen the East/West shrine game as well as the Senior Bowl. Later this month is the Combine, or as many people call it, the NFL's personal meat market. As crazy as it sounds to watch a bunch of players get measured and run drills, I cannot get enough of this stuff.
The offseason is a truly amazing time, and one of the most interesting plot points, at least for me, is the secondary. Tarell Brown and Donte Whitner are both free agents, and I would bet anything that Carlos Rogers will not be playing on his current contract next season. Tramaine Brock has established himself as a starter but who starts opposite of him and who plays nickel remains a mystery. Chris Culliver is back, I'm high on him, but I know a lot of people soured on him at the end of the Superbowl two seasons ago. I would like a starting duo of Brock and Culliver. Still, corner is definitely a need in the draft, and I believe one should be taken in the first few rounds.
Donte Whitner presents another tough problem. He was great last season, even in coverage, but I believe much like Dashon Goldson, he is expendable. I would like to see him back as I'm not sure how wise spending a first round pick on a safety two years in a row is. However, If he wants to be paid like an elite safety I believe and hope that he will need to find that paycheck elsewhere. To the links!
