BUILDING THE NINERS' 2014 ROSTER: PART 4 OF 4 -- CUT TO THE FINAL ROSTERS

Never in my 35-year business career did I ever play the bait and switch game. But then, this isn't business, so maybe a little change is in order. Let it not be said that in my old age I became inflexible and unwilling to change. Let me explain. I put quite a bit of homework into building my Niners 2014 mock draft (Part 3 or 4 of the post) ... and I really liked what I came up with. However, after reading many of your responses, I began to have some second thoughts ... I could see how to make it better. Accordingly, this final part in the series is going to alter course a bit. Before we get to the cuts to the final rosters, I want to post a redo of Part 3 ... but without all the embellishments ... just the mock results.

Pre-Draft Actions

1. As before, trade RB/KR/PR LaMichael James to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for their fourth-round draft pick ... #118.

2. As before, trade OG Mike Iupati to the highest bidder of eight teams (or others expressing interest), all of whom have listed the need for an OG as one of their three biggest needs, in exchange for their second-round draft pick ... #34-50.

3. During the Draft, trade the fifth-round draft pick (#158) for a fourth-round pick in the 2015 Draft.

4. Since the Niners have already re-signed #3 QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson to a futures contract for 2014, I've decided to ride with that and not include a QB prospect in my mock draft.

Revised Niners Mock Draft

As before, the number just after the prospect's school is his present overall ranking by NFLDraftScout. Obviously that ranking may well change, even substantially, between now and the draft in May.

@ indicates a revised selection

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 1 / Pick 30 (Own Pick):

C Travis Swanson (Arkansas) 32 6'5" / 310 / 5.26 speed / Senior (#1 ranked Center)

Round 2 / Pick 34-50 (from trade of Mike Iupati):

@ FS Lamarcus Joyner (Florida State) 48 5'8" / 190 / 4.52 speed / Senior (#6 ranked CB)

  • Because of his size, speed and hitting ability, my plan would be to move Joyner from CB to the FS position; Eric Reid would continue to play FS (paired with either Whitner or Bernard Pollard at SS) until Joyner learns the system; then, the bigger Reid would be moved to SS and Joyner would be installed at FS. Obviously the more conventional pick here would be SS Deone Bucannon (Washington State), but once you spend time watching tape of Joyner and thinking about the role that Earl Thomas plays for Seattle, you get hooked. If you like Bucannon better (and Reid at FS) then just mentally substitute him for Joyner.

Round 2 / Pick 56 (from Kansas City):

CB Kyle Fuller (Virginia Tech) 59 6'0" / 194 / 4.45 speed / Senior (#7 ranked CB)

Round 2 / Pick 61 (Own Pick):

@ WR Martavis Bryant (Clemson) 74 6'5" / 200 / 4.38 speed / Junior (#12 ranked WR)

Round 3 / Pick 77 (from Tennessee):

@ WR Robert Herron (Wyoming) 80 5'9" / 193 / 4.38 speed / Senior (#13 ranked WR)

Round 3 / Pick 94 (Own Pick):

CB Keith McGill (Utah) 95 6'3" / 214 / 4.49 speed / Senior (#13 ranked CB)

Round 3 / Pick ~ 98 (Compensatory Pick):

@ OL Billy Turner (North Dakota State) 97 6'5" / 316 / 5.28 speed / Senior (#10 ranked OT[OG])

Round 4 / Pick 125 (Own Pick):

@ OT James Hurst (North Carolina) 128 6'6" / 305 / 5.28 speed / Senior (#12 ranked OT)

  • Hurst suffered a broken leg in the Belk Bowl game on 12/30/13. Prior to that he was projected to be selected in the 2nd or early-3rd round of the Draft. Anticipate the Niners putting Hurst on the NFI Roster for all of 2014.

Round 5 / Pick 158 (Own Pick): TRADED FOR 4TH ROUND PICK IN 2015 DRAFT

Round 6 / Pick 189 (Own Pick):
@ KR / PR De'Anthony Thomas (Oregon) 218 5'9 / 170 / 4.34 speed / Junior (#18 ranked RB)

Round 7 / Pick 219 (from New Orleans):
CB Aaron Colvin (Oklahoma) 222 6'0" / 186 / 4.48 speed / Senior (#28 ranked CB)

  • Colvin suffered a torn ACL at the Senior Bowl practice on 1/21/14. Prior to that he was projected to be selected in the third round of the Draft. Anticipate the Niners putting Colvin on the NFI Roster for all of 2014.

Round 7 / Pick 220 (from Carolina):
@ DT Jay Bromley (Syracuse) 226 6'3" / 307 / 4.98 speed / Senior (#21 ranked DT)

  • Drafted for the Practice Squad.

Round 7 / Pick 222 (Own Pick):
@ S Jonathan Dowling (Western Kentucky) 284 6'2" / 198 / 4.52 speed / Junior (#12 ranked FS)

  • Drafted for the Practice Squad.

Sorry to throw you a curve ball ... but BETTER IS BETTER!

I've been a Niners fan for a long time ... this is my 64th year as a devotee. I can honestly say that IF this roster were to be put together, it would be the strongest overall that the Niners have ever had ... including the teams in the 80's and 90's. C'mon Trent ... get 'er done!
