The Case for Darrelle Revis

This got me thinking.

Revis is available, and is an elite talent at a position of need. We have an abundance of picks and are fully in win-now mode. With big money extensions coming up for Kap, Aldon, Crabtree, and others, we may never be in a position to put a more talented roster, top-to-bottom, together than this year.

Revis brings us a piece we've been missing for years: a true shut-down corner. He can play on a island and take away the other team's best receiving threat. He would make the pass rush up front even more effective and create turnovers. He would make our defense even more dominant. Revis/Culliver/Brock makes us 3 deep with quality corners. This also frees us up to pursue other areas of need (safety, WR) in the first round.

With a projected $14-15M in cap space after releasing Rogers, we should be able to easily get far enough under the cap to absorb Revis' $16M salary. He won't affect our future cap either if we get in a pinch. Because of the way his contract is structured ($13M base salary, $3M roster bonus every year), he can be cut at any time with zero dead money hit. So he won't stop us from keeping core pieces when the chips are down if we don't want him to.

So here's my proposal: Pick #61 for Revis, straight up. Tampa Bay saves face and gets something of value for Revis rather than releasing him. We get an elite corner who can take our defense to the next level and potentially get us to the promised land. Even if he is only a one- or two-year rental for the Niners, I think it would be worth it if it gets us that elusive 6th Super Bowl ring.
