I'm hoping we can get something worked out. If not, they'll have to address the need in the draft or FA as wedont have anyone on our roster worthy of starting IMO. I'll also eliminate any big FA names like Byrd who would command at least as much $$$ as Whitner because I think they'd just pay Whitner instead and keep their own guy around.
Are there any decent replacements available through FA at a good price? Weak draft for safeties along with lots of teams in need would make me think no.
Who do you like in the draft? Buchannon (sp?) seems to be a favorite, but I think we'd have to use our 1st or move up quite a bit in the 2nd (likely giving up a 3rd or 4th to do so).
What about Loston from LSU? He should be available at the bottom of the 2nd for sure if we like him, with a decent chance we could even grab him in the 3rd. Reid probably knows his ability/potential/character as much as anybody. Or maybe a guy like Bailey out of USC or take a risk with a talented guy coming off an injury in Sunseri? Will he be good to go next year? Even missing some time in going into camp would be especially bad news for a rookie looking to start. Brooks scares me in that he's athletic as can be, but also relies on his athleticism a bit too much IMO.
My opinion is that we could get a decent starter with our 2nd 2nd round pick or in the 3rd, after we address receiver and maybe corner or just get a BPA that falls into our laps (with so much talent early in this draft, some very quality guys are going to drop into our laps), but it really worries me that there will be a run on all the decent safeties so I'm not sold on the idea
