So I have done a lot of defending Aldon, Kap and Culliver in the comment section of these threads and the first thing I want to do is clear something up: I am not defending these players actions if found to be true. The problem is they have not been founded to be true and in Kap's case, seems like its not even close to being true. But as I keep repeating myself, its best to wait until all pertinent facts are released and found before making a conclusion. Ive seen alot of media figures and outlets make pretty big assumptions about these players guilt in which none have been founded to be true as of yet. This isn't just a good practice for 49ers related incidents but for life in general. People making bold conclusions in the face of little evidence is why we have a lot of the problems we have today in our society. But now I wanted to go through why I think 49ers will and should eventually pick up Aldon Smiths 5th year option and extension later down the road.
The most obvious, he's one of the best players on the team and one of the best players at a position that is as crucial as any in the league. Even if he is eventually convicted, will anybody care. Hmm lets see, criminal possession of guns and DUI, gee I wish I knew someone that had a similar rap sheet. Oh wait his name is Marshawn Lynch AKA Beast Mode. And to top that off he has a hit and run as well and all three of these have gone to a conviction... all while in the NFL. But does anybody care... NO... why... because he is easily one of the best players in the league at his position and probably the biggest offensive reason for their super bowl ring.
Another important tidbit to point out about this is his last arrest happened almost 2 years ago and he just got convicted 2 months ago. Fans and media have forgotten about his 3 arrests/convictions and only remember him telling Darren Sharper to hold his diiiiiiiiiii**. Thats how legal issues play out. By the time Aldon Smith reaches a plea deal or conviction or who knows is found innocent, it will be 1-2 years from now. And if he continues to be one of the best pass rushers in the league we will have long forgotten about these incidents and all we will get is a 8 sentence news update on how his case was resolved that most of us won't even read and just wonder why he got a 2 game suspension.
As much as we want to believe it there is no fanbase that is on some higher moral mountain top than others. All we care about is winning. We will punish (with our very coveted dollars) the franchise and the NFL more for losing games while keeping a moral high ground than we would if they were winning games with every member from San Quentin Cell Block 4. Its just who we are. Ryan Braun proved to me that fans will forgive any amount of D-Baggery as long as your helping the team win.
And really, are his charges that bad. Some kind of gun possession charge that has to do with not getting some kind of modification he didnt get to his weapon... boohoo. Possibly saying the word bomb to a TSA agent that he might have been harrassing him (We don't know any hard facts and he still has yet to be charged). Possibly Possessing Marijuana which, lets be honest, will probably be moot in California by the time these charges come up. And Ill admit the DUI was probably his worst but there's a lot of DUIs in this country and this league and those are just the ones that have been caught. I don't bring these up to defend him, just bringing them up to point out one thing. Ben Roethlisberger has been twice accused of sexual assault... an accusation that carries far greater moral and character issues in my book than any of Aldons alleged crimes. And besides a few jokes on his name, and a 4 game suspension, he seems to be doing just fine since the accusations. And I think Aldon will as well.
